Action Lab, EdPlus at ASU seeks a motivated and skilled Data Analyst to join our high-performing interdisciplinary research team. Action Lab is a learning laboratory inside EdPlus that provides data-driven strategies and research findings that enhance our learning and transformational project  portfolios and make changes at ASU with data. With an emphasis on online learning, our predictive and evaluative analyses support student success and persistence from curiosity to graduation. Action Lab works on transformational projects that aim to increase the reach, breadth, and scale of learning through research committed to improving equity, inclusivity, and the quality of education for learners
everywhere. Our research is actionable and operationally oriented, and we support and coordinate with high-level university stakeholders to improve student learning, motivation, and persistence and to increase equity across the university. We are a fast-paced unit that gets stuff done and makes a difference in the lives of our ASU students to drive change and bolster successes grounded in data and research.

This position will directly contribute to the scholarly research and general data analysis for Study Hall, an
innovative, highly visible, enterprise-level project. Study Hall is an expanding collaboration with
Complexly (the creators of CrashCourse) and YouTube helps students navigate the complex world of
college and learn the concepts and skills needed to gain access and succeed in college. Study Hall focuses
on designing and delivering digital teaching resources to increase student success and reduce barriers to
achievement in higher education. Study Hall promotes the scale of learning and is committed to

researcher who will be resourceful and demonstrate excellent time management, a willingness to

Action Lab is a matrixed organization, which means that depending on a given project or a project phase,
a researcher may report through different work streams. While this position will officially report to the
Portfolio Manager for Research who oversees the Study research product streams, this researcher will
work closely with other researchers and leadership who contribute to Study Hall’s scholarly research
efforts. As an integral component of the Study Hall research team, this researcher will work
collaboratively with other Action Lab researchers, staff, and faculty to co-manage the Study Hall
quantitative research protocols and to analyze, coordinate, and maintain research information.

The ideal candidate for this position will bring strong skills in quantitative data management, statistical
analysis, and modeling, and a strong knowledge of research methodologies and applications in higher
education. To be successful in this position, this researcher will suggest and align quantitative methodologies with broader research goals; accurately and efficiently extract, clean, transform, and analyze data; and identify trends and patterns in the data.

Knowledge of and proficiency in using R to manage data, conduct descriptive and inferential analyses, and model data is required. General or basic SQL skills are required.

Essential Duties:

• Collaborates with Study Hall research team to conduct data analyses that will inform evidence-based instructional practices, pedagogy, engagement, and technology decisions.
• Selects, develops, and/or recommends appropriate data analyses, and statistical procedures; assists with determining appropriate processes for a particular project(s).
• Coordinates and determines data compatibility from various sources (e.g., internal ASU data tables and external datasets) with support from data management teams.
• Uses various computer programs and software to perform data computation, statistical analysis, etc. (ability to read and program in R or Python is required; the flexibility to work in other languages and environments, including Julia, SQL, and Alteryx is desirable).
• Performs data cleaning, statistical analysis, and data visualization; manages data collection and compilation; analyzes and interprets quantitative data.
• Collaborates with Study Hall and cross-functional teams to develop and maintain dictionaries and SQL logic in support of data needs.
• Co-manages survey research process in Qualtrics; designs, develops, and implements research surveys using Qualtrics.
• Understands, values, and contributes to the richness of co-informed data-driven insights (i.e., those formed from the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods)
• Contributes to internal Action Lab/Study Hall reports and presentations as needed; helps prepare formal research reports and presentations for dissemination to various audiences;
• Performs literature reviews to inform research design.
• Manages a high volume of research files; tracks, manages, prioritizes, and reports daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.
• Assists with the development of long- and short-range goals.
• Assumes or coordinates other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in data management, statistical analysis, and modeling in R or Python.
• Experience with SQL, Alteryx, or BigQuery, or an ability to learn.
• Experience in descriptive statistics, linear modeling, survival analysis, and multivariate statistics.
• Evidence of creative research design ideas to elicit defensible and co-informed research findings.
• Experience with quantitative research methods, including but not limited to experimental/quasi-experimental design, descriptive and inferential statistics, modeling data
• Experience/interests in various statistical abilities and interest in developing skills to match needs in these areas.
• Evidence of effective communication and collaboration skills
• Ability and willingness to work in a highly matrixed and team environment.
• Experience in higher education research and practice preferred.
• Evidence of a Masters preferred, ideally in learning sciences, data science, or related discipline or from a quantitatively rigorous area of study; will consider candidates that are close to defense date/ABD with a plan to finish within a reasonable timeframe.

EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English, read, write, see, and hear to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
