DescriptionThe Innovation team is seeking an AI Data Specialist to join our dynamic, multi-disciplinary team. This role will support various activities related to data analysis and machine learning model development for a vessel digital twin. The successful candidate will play a key role in ongoing initiatives, including the data preparation, development of physics-informed and data-centric models, machine learning model development, deployment, and testing. The successful applicant for this permanent position will work within the Seaspan Innovation team at Vancouver Shipyards, gaining exposure to and participating in Innovation and Business Development strategies through government related projects for the Canadian Coast Guard, Navy, and other marine industry partners.
Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.Β
What youβll do
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and build scalable data and machine learning pipelines.
- Prepare, clean, and transform raw data from various sources into structured formats suitable for machine learning tasks.
- Develop and implement robust feature engineering techniques to enhance model performance.
- Validate models using rigorous testing frameworks, including unit tests and integration tests, to ensure reliability and scalability.
- Support the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of machine learning models in production environments.
- Document processes, workflows, and findings to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Provide technical insights and recommendations to enhance data infrastructure and machine learning workflows.
What youβll bring
- A bachelorβs degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, with 2 to 4 years of experience in data science, data engineering, or machine learning-related fields.
- Proficiency in Python, including experience with machine learning frameworks such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
- Proven experience in preparing and managing large datasets, including data wrangling, feature engineering, and creating train-test-validation datasets for machine learning workflows.
- Hands-on experience in the full lifecycle of machine learning projects, including data collection, preparation, model development, validation, deployment, and maintenance.
- Experience with exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify trends and support business decision-making processes.
- Strong knowledge of SQL and experience working with database management systems to extract, transform, and load data for machine learning pipelines.
- Expertise in designing and executing robust unit tests to validate custom functions, layers, and utility modules, ensuring code reliability.
- Familiarity with integration testing for machine learning pipelines and workflows, covering data preprocessing, model training, and evaluation.
- Experience in conducting technical investigations and writing comprehensive technical reports to communicate findings effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex data engineering and machine learning issues.
- A business mindset, enabling alignment of technical innovation with organizational goals and outcomes.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Ability to prioritize and manage tasks effectively, meet strict deadlines, and perform well under pressure.

The estimated salary for this position is $82,700-$99,200. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidateβs skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Companyβs sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.Β
